You Shall Die
Therefore said I to you that you shall die in your sins; for if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sins ~John 8:24
Chapter Eight
CHAPTER 8: VERSE 1
Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying:
JESUS
I am the Light of the world: he
that follows me shall not walk in
darkness, but shall have the light
of life.
VERSE 13
The Pharisees therefore said to him:
PHARISEES
Thou testifiest of thyself: thy
testimony is not true.
VERSE 14
Jesus answered and said to them:
JESUS
Though I testify of myself, my
testimony is true, for I know
whence I came and whither I go: you
know not whence I come or whither I
go.
VERSE 15
JESUS
You judge according to the flesh; I
judge no one.
VERSE 16
JESUS
And even if I judge, my judgment is
true, because I am not alone, but I
and he that sent me.
VERSE 17
JESUS
And even in your law it is written
that the testimony of two men is
true.
VERSE 18
JESUS
I am one testifying of myself, and
the Father who sent me testifies of
me.
VERSE 19
They said therefore to him:
PHARISEES
Where is thy Father?
Jesus answered:
JESUS
You know neither me nor my Father:
if you had known me, you would have
known my Father also.
VERSE 20
These words spoke he in the treasury while teaching in the
temple; and no one took him, because his hour had not yet
come.
VERSE 21
He therefore said again to them:
JESUS
I go away, and you shall seek me,
and in your sin you shall die:
whither I go you cannot come.
VERSE 22
The Jews then said:
JEWS
Will he kill himself, because he
says: Whither I go you cannot come?
VERSE 23
And he said to them:
JESUS
You are from beneath, I am from
above: you are of this world, I am
not of this world.
VERSE 24
JESUS
Therefore said I to you that you
shall die in your sins; for if you
believe not that I am he, you shall
die in your sins.
VERSE 25
They said therefore to him:
JEWS
Who art thou?
Jesus said to them:
JESUS
Altogether that which I also say to
you.
VERSE 26
JESUS
I have many things to say and to
judge of you; but he that sent me
is true, and what I have heard from
him, these things I speak unto the
world.
VERSE 27
They knew not that he spoke to them of the Father.
VERSE 28
Then said Jesus:
JESUS
When you shall have, lifted up the
Son of man, then you shall know
that I am he, and that I do nothing
of myself, but as the Father has
taught me, I speak these things.
VERSE 29
JESUS
And he that sent me is with me: he
has not left me alone, for I do
always the things that are pleasing
to him.
VERSE 30
While he was speaking these things many believed on him.
VERSE 31
Jesus then said to the Jews that believed on him:
JESUS
If you abide in my word, you are my
disciples in truth,
VERSE 32
JESUS
…and you shall know the truth,
and the truth shall make you free.
VERSE 33
They answered to him:
JEWS
We are Abraham’s posterity, and
have never been in bondage to any
one; how sayest thou: You shall
become free?
VERSE 34
Jesus answered them:
JESUS
Verily, verily, I say to you, that
every one that does sin is a
servant of sin.
VERSE 35
JESUS
But the servant abides not in the
house forever: the Son abides
forever.
VERSE 36
JESUS
If, then, the Son shall make you
free, you shall be free indeed.
VERSE 37
JESUS
I know that you are Abraham’s
posterity; but you seek to kill me,
because my word has no place in
you.
VERSE 38
JESUS
I speak what things I have seen
with my Father, and you then do
what things you have heard from
your father.
VERSE 39
They answered and said to him:
JEWS
Abraham is our father.
Jesus says to them:
JESUS
If you were the children of
Abraham, you would do the works of
Abraham;
VERSE 40
JESUS
…but now you seek to kill me, a
man that has spoken to you the
truth, which I heard from God: this
Abraham did not.
VERSE 41
JESUS
You do the works of your fathers.
They said to him:
JEWS
We have not been born of lewdness;
we have one Father, God.
VERSE 42
Jesus said to them:
JESUS
If God were your Father, you would
love me; for I came forth from God
and have come hither: nor indeed
have I come of myself, but he sent
me.
VERSE 43
JESUS
Why know you not my speech? Because
you cannot hear my word.
VERSE 44
JESUS
You are of your father, the devil,
and the desires of your father you
will do. He was a murderer from the
beginning, and has not stood in the
truth, because there is no truth in
him. When he speaks what is false,
he speaks of his own, for he is a
liar and the father of it.
VERSE 45
JESUS
But because I tell you the truth,
you believe me not.
VERSE 46
JESUS
Which of you convinces me of sin?
If I speak the truth, why do you
not believe me?
VERSE 47
JESUS
He that is of God hears the words
of God; for this reason you hear
not, because you are not of God.
VERSE 48
The Jews answered and said to him:
JEWS
Do we not well say that thou art a
Samaritan, and hast a demon?
VERSE 49
Jesus answered:
JESUS
I have not a demon, but I honor my
Father, and you dishonor me.
VERSE 50
JESUS
But I seek not my glory: there is
that seeks and judges.
VERSE 51
JESUS
Verily, verily, I say to you, if
any one keep my word, he shall
never see death.
VERSE 52
The Jews said to him:
JEWS
Now we know that thou hast a demon.
Abraham is dead, and the prophets;
and thou sayest: If any one keep my
word, he shall never taste of
death:
VERSE 53
JEWS
…art thou greater than our father
Abraham, who is dead? And the
prophets are dead: whom makest thou
thyself?
VERSE 54
Jesus answered:
JESUS
If I glorify myself, my glory is
nothing; it is my Father that
glorifies me, of whom you say that
he is your God;
VERSE 55
JESUS
…and yet you have not known him,
but I know him. If I should say
that I do not know him, I should be
a liar like you; but I know him,
and his word I keep.
VERSE 56
JESUS
Abraham, your father, rejoiced that
he could see my day, and he saw it
and was glad.
VERSE 57
The Jews then said to him:
JEWS
Thou art not yet fifty years old,
and hast thou seen Abraham?
VERSE 58
Jesus said to them:
JESUS
Verily, verily, I say to you,
before Abraham came into being, I
am.
VERSE 59
They therefore took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid
himself and went out of the temple.
