Living Water
He that believes on me, as the scripture said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water ~John 7:38
Chapter Seven
CHAPTER 7: VERSE 1
After this Jesus walked in Galilee; for he would not walk in
Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
VERSE 2
But the feast of the Jews, that of tabernacles, was near.
VERSE 3
His brothers therefore said to him:
BROTHERS
Depart hence and go into Judea,
that thy disciples also may see the
works that thou doest;
VERSE 4
BROTHERS
…for no one does any thing in
secret and desires himself to be
known openly. If thou doest these
things, make thyself manifest to
the world.
VERSE 5
For neither did his brothers believe on him.
VERSE 6
Jesus says to them:
JESUS
My time is not yet present, but
your time is always ready.
VERSE 7
JESUS
The world cannot hate you, but me
it hates, because I testify of it
that its works are evil.
VERSE 8
JESUS
Do you go up to the feast: I go not
up to this feast, because my time
has not yet fully come.
VERSE 9
Having said these things, he abode in Galilee.
VERSE 10
But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he
himself also went up, not openly, but in secret.
VERSE 11
The Jews then sought for him at the feast, and said:
JEWS
Where is he?
VERSE 12
And there was much murmuring concerning him among the
multitude; some said:
MEN
He is a good man.
Others said:
MEN
No, but he deceives the multitude.
VERSE 13
No one, however, spoke boldly concerning him, for fear of
the Jews.
VERSE 14
But now at the middle of the festival Jesus went up into
the, temple and taught.
VERSE 15
The Jews therefore were astonished, saying:
JEWS
How knows this man letters, not
having learned?
VERSE 16
Jesus then answered them and said:
JESUS
My teaching is not mine, but his
that sent me:
VERSE 17
JESUS
…if anyone will do his will he
shall know of the teaching, whether
it is of God, or I speak of myself.
VERSE 18
JESUS
He that speaks of himself seeks his
own glory: he that seeks the glory
of him that sent him, he is true,
and unrighteousness is not in him.
VERSE 19
JESUS
Has not Moses given you the law?
And none of you does the law. Why
do you seek to kill me?
VERSE 20
The multitude answered:
MEN
Thou hast a demon: who seekest to
kill thee?
VERSE 21
Jesus answered and said to them:
JESUS
One work I have done and you all
wonder.
VERSE 22
JESUS
Moses has given you circumcision,
not that it is of Moses, but of the
fathers, and on the sabbath day you
circumcise a man.
VERSE 23
JESUS
If a man receives circumcision on
the sabbath, that the law of Moses
may not be broken. Are you angry
with me because I restored the
entire man to health on the sabbath?
VERSE 24
JESUS
Judge not, according to appearance,
but judge righteous judgment.
VERSE 25
Then said some of those of Jerusalem:
MEN
Is not this he whom they seek to
kill?
VERSE 26
MEN
And lo, he speaks boldly, and they
say nothing to him. Have the
rulers then certainly known that
this is the Christ?
VERSE 27
MEN
However, we know this man, whence
he is; but when the Christ comes,
no one knows whence he is.
VERSE 28
Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and
saying:
JESUS
You both know me, and you know
whence I am; and I have not come of
myself, but he is true that sent
me, whom you know not:
VERSE 29
JESUS
I know him, because I am from him
and he sent me.
VERSE 30
They therefore sought to take him, and no one laid his hand
on him, because his hour had not yet come.
VERSE 31
But many of the multitude believed on him, and said:
MEN
When Christ comes, will he do more
signs than these that this man
does?
VERSE 32
The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things
concerning him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent
attendants that they might take him.
VERSE 33
Therefore said Jesus:
JESUS
Yet a little while I am with you,
and I go to him that sent me.
VERSE 34
JESUS
You shall seek me and shall not
find me, and where I am you cannot
come.
VERSE 35
The Jews therefore said one to another:
JEWS
Whither does this man intend to go,
that we shall not find him? Does he
intend to go among the dispersion
of the Greeks and teach the Greeks?
VERSE 36
JEWS
What means this word that he spoke:
You shall seek me and shall not
find me, and where I am, you cannot
come?
VERSE 37
But on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood
and cried, saying:
JESUS
If anyone thirst, let him come and
drink.
VERSE 38
JESUS
He that believes on me, as the
scripture said, out of his belly
shall flow rivers of living water.
VERSE 39
But this he spoke of the Spirit which those that believe on
him were about to receive; for the Spirit was not yet,
because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
VERSE 40
Some of the multitude therefore, hearing these words, said:
MEN
This is in truth the prophet;
VERSE 41
Others said:
MEN
This is the Christ;
Others said:
MEN
Does the Christ then come out of
Galilee?
VERSE 42
MEN
Has not the scripture said that the
Christ comes of the posterity of
David, and from Bethlehem, the town
where David was?
VERSE 43
There was therefore a division among the multitude, because
of him;
VERSE 44
But some of them wished to take him; no one, however, laid
hands on him.
VERSE 45
The attendants therefore came to the chief priests and
Pharisees; and they said to them:
PRIESTS
Why did you not bring him?
VERSE 46
The attendants answered:
MEN
Never man so spoke, as this man
speaks.
VERSE 47
The Pharisees answered them:
PHARISEES
Are you also deceived?
VERSE 48
PHARISEES
Has any one of the rulers believed
on him, or of the Pharisees?
VERSE 49
PHARISEES
But the multitude, that knows not
the law, are cursed.
VERSE 50
Nicodemus, being one of them, says to them:
VERSE 51
NICODEMUS
Does our law condemn the, man
unless it first hear from him and
know what he does?
VERSE 52
They answered and said to him:
PRIESTS
Art thou also of Galilee? Search and
see that out of Galilee a prophet
arises not.
