These Things
This is the disciple that testifies of these things, and that wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true ~John 21:24
Chapter Twentyone
CHAPTER 21: VERSE 1
After these things Jesus manifested himself to the disciples
at the sea of Tiberias: and he manifested himself thus.
VERSE 2
There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas who is called
Didymus, and Nathaniel who was from Cana of Galilee, and the
sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples.
VERSE 3
Simon Peter says to them:
SIMON PETER
I go a fishing.
They say to him:
DISCIPLES
We also are going with thee.
They went out and entered the ship, and on that night they
caught nothing.
VERSE 4
But the morning having now come, Jesus stood on the shore:
the disciples, however, knew not that it was Jesus.
VERSE 5
Jesus therefore says to them:
JESUS
Children, have you any thing to
eat? (beside bread).
They answered him:
DISCIPLES
No.
VERSE 6
He says to them:
JESUS
Cast the net on the right side of
the ship, and you shall find.
They cast therefore, and were no longer able to draw it
because of the multitude of fishes.
VERSE 7
That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter:
DISCIPLES
It is the Lord.
Simon Peter therefore, hearing that it was the Lord, girded
on his upper garment, for he was naked, and threw himself
into the sea;
VERSE 8
…but the other disciples came with the ship (for they were
not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits off),
dragging the net of fishes.
VERSE 9
Therefore when they had come to the land, they saw a fire of
coals lying, and fish lying on it, and bread.
VERSE 10
Jesus says to them:
JESUS
Bring of the fish that you have
just now taken.
VERSE 11
Simon Peter came up and drew the net to land, full of great
fishes, a hundred and fifty-three: and though there were so
many, the net was not rent.
VERSE 12
Jesus says to them:
JESUS
Come and breakfast.
But no one of the disciples ventured to ask him: “Who art thou?”
Knowing that it was the Lord.
VERSE 13
Jesus comes and takes the bread and gives it to them, and
the fish in like manner.
VERSE 14
This was now the third time on which Jesus had manifested
himself to the disciples, after he had risen from the dead.
VERSE 15
Therefore, when they had breakfasted, Jesus says to Simon
Peter:
JESUS
Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou me
more than these?
He says to him:
SIMON PETER
Yes, Lord, thou knowest that I love
thee.
He says to him:
JESUS
Feed my lambs.
VERSE 16
He says to him again a second time:
JESUS
Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou
me?
He says to him:
SIMON PETER
Yes, Lord, thou knowest that I love
thee.
He says to him:
JESUS
Be a shepherd to my sheep.
VERSE 17
He says to him the third time:
JESUS
Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou
me?
Peter was grieved because he had said to him the third time:“Lovest thou me?”
And he says to him:
SIMON PETER
Lord, thou knowest all things; thou
knowest that I love thee.
He says to him:
JESUS
Feed my sheep.
VERSE 18
JESUS
Verily, verily, I say to you, when
thou wast young thou didst gird
thyself and walk whither thou
wouldst; but when thou shalt become
old, thou shalt stretch forth thy
hands, and another shall gird thee,
and carry thee whither thou wouldst
not.
VERSE 19
But this he spoke signifying by what kind of death he should
glorify God. And having said this, he says to him:
JESUS
Follow me.
VERSE 20
Peter turned and saw the disciple that Jesus loved
following, who also reclined at supper on his breast and
said:
SIMON PETER
Lord, who is he that delivers thee
up?
VERSE 21
Peter therefore, seeing this man, says to Jesus:
SIMON PETER
Lord, but what shall this man do?
VERSE 22
Jesus says to him:
JESUS
If I will that he remain till I
come, what is that to thee? Follow
thou me.
VERSE 23
Therefore went this saying, forth among the brethren, that
that disciple should not die; and yet Jesus did not say to
him: “Thou shalt not die,” but:
JESUS
If I will that he remain till I
come.
VERSE 24
This is the disciple that testifies of these things, and
that wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is
true.
