Condemnation
He that hears my word and believes on him that sent me has life eternal, and comes not into condemnation, but has passed out of death into life ~John 5:24
Chapter Five
CHAPTER 5: VERSE 1
After this was the feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to
Jerusalem.
VERSE 2
And there is in Jerusalem at the sheep gate a pool, which is
called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.
VERSE 3
In these lay a multitude of sick persons, blind, lame,
withered.
VERSE 5
But there was a man there that had been sick thirty-eight
years.
VERSE 6
Jesus saw him lying, and, knowing that he had already been
sick a long time, said to him:
JESUS
Wilt thou be restored to health?
VERSE 7
The sick man answered him:
SICK MAN
Sir, I have no man, that when the
water is stirred he may put me into
the pool; but while I am coming
another goes down before me.
VERSE 8
Jesus says to him:
JESUS
Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.
VERSE 9
And the man was restored to health, and took up his bed and
walked; but a sabbath was on that day.
VERSE 10
The Jews then said to him that had been cured:
JEWS
It is a sabbath, and it is not
lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
VERSE 11
He answered them:
SICK MAN
He that made me well said to me:
Take up thy bed and walk.
VERSE 12
They asked him:
JEWS
Who is the man that said to thee:
Take up and walk?
VERSE 13
But the sick man knew not who he was; for Jesus had
withdrawn, as a multitude was in the place.
VERSE 14
After this Jesus finds him in the temple; and he said to
him:
JESUS
Behold, thou hast been restored to
health: sin no more, lest something
worse befall thee.
VERSE 15
The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus that
had made him well.
VERSE 16
And for this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he
did these things on the sabbath.
VERSE 17
But he answered them:
JESUS
My Father works till now, and I
work.
VERSE 18
For this reason did the Jews seek the more to kill him,
because he not only broke the sabbath, but also called God
his own Father, making himself equal to God.
VERSE 19
Jesus therefore answered and said to them:
JESUS
Verily, verily, I say to you, The
Son can do nothing of himself, but
what he sees the Father do; for
whatever he does, these also the
Son does in like manner,
VERSE 20
JESUS
For the Father loves the Son and
shows him all things that he
himself does; and greater works
than these will he show him, that
you may wonder.
VERSE 21
JESUS
For as the Father raises the dead
and makes them alive, so also the
Son makes alive whom he will.
VERSE 22
JESUS
For neither does the Father judge
any one, but has given all judicial
authority to the Son,
VERSE 23
JESUS
…that all may honor the Son as
they honor the Father. He that
honors not the Son honors not the
Father who sent him.
VERSE 24
JESUS
Verily, verily, I say to you, that
he that hears my word and believes
on him that sent me has life
eternal, and comes not into
condemnation, but has passed out of
death into life.
VERSE 25
JESUS
Verily, verily, I say to you, that
the hour comes, and now is, when
the dead shall hear the voice of
the Son of God, and they that hear
shall live.
VERSE 26
JESUS
For as the Father has life in
himself, so has he given to the Son
also to have life in himself.
VERSE 27
JESUS
And he has given him authority to
execute judgment, because he is the
Son of man.
VERSE 28
JESUS
Wonder not at this, for the hour
comes in which all that are in the
graves shall hear his voice…
VERSE 29
JESUS
…and shall come forth, those that
have done good, to the resurrection
of life; those that have done evil,
to the resurrection of
condemnation.
VERSE 30
JESUS
I can do nothing of myself: as I
hear I judge, and my judgment is
righteous, because I seek not my
will, but the will of him that sent
me.
VERSE 31
JESUS
If I testify of myself, my
testimony is not true:
VERSE 32
JESUS
…there is another that testifies
of me, and you know that the
testimony which he testifies of me
is true.
VERSE 33
JESUS
You have sent to John, and he has
testified to the truth;
VERSE 34
JESUS
…but I receive not testimony from
man, but these things I say that
you may be saved.
VERSE 35
JESUS
He was the burning and the shining
light, and you were willing to
rejoice for an hour in his light.
VERSE 36
JESUS
But I have testimony greater than
that of John; for the works which
the Father has given me to
accomplish, the works themselves
that I do, testify of me that the
Father has sent me.
VERSE 37
JESUS
And the Father who sent me, he has
testified of me: neither his voice
have you heard at any time, nor his
shape have you seen…
VERSE 38
JESUS
…and his word you have not
abiding in you, for whom he has
sent, him you believe not.
VERSE 39
JESUS
You search the scriptures, because
you think that in them you have
eternal life, and they are they
that testify of me;
VERSE 40
JESUS
…and yet you will not come to me
that you may have life.
VERSE 41
JESUS
I receive not glory from men,
VERSE 42
JESUS
…but I know you, that you have
not the love of God in you.
VERSE 43
JESUS
I have come in my Father’s name,
and you receive me not: if another
should come in his own name, him
you would receive.
VERSE 44
JESUS
How can you believe while receiving
glory one from another, and you
seek not the glory that is from the
only God?
VERSE 45
JESUS
Think not that I will accuse you to
the Father: there is he that
accuses you, Moses, in whom you
trust.
VERSE 46
JESUS
For if you had believed Moses, you
would have believed me; for he
wrote of me.
VERSE 47
JESUS
But if you believe not his
writings, how will you believe my
words?
