A Light
I have come a light into the world, that whoever believes on me may not abide in darkness ~John 12:46
Chapter Twelve
CHAPTER 12: VERSE 1
Jesus therefore, six days before the passover, came to
Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised from the dead.
VERSE 2
They therefore made him a supper there, and Martha served,
but Lazarus was one of those that reclined at table with
him.
VERSE 3
Then Mary took a pound of the ointment of pure nard, very
costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet
with her hair; and the house was filled with the perfume of
the ointment.
Verse 4
But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, he that was about
to deliver him up, says:
VERSE 5
JUDAS
Why was this ointment not sold for
three hundred denarii, and given to
the poor?
VERSE 6
But this he said, not because he cared for the poor, but
because he was a thief, and having the bag he carried what
was thrown in.
VERSE 7
Jesus therefore said:
JESUS
Let her alone; she bought it that
she might keep it to the day of my
burial.
VERSE 8
JESUS
For the poor you have always with
you, but me you have not always.
VERSE 9
The great multitude of the Jews therefore knew that he was
there, and came not because of Jesus only, but that they
might see Lazarus also, whom he raised from the dead.
VERSE 10
But the chief priests had determined that they would kill
Lazarus also,
VERSE 11
…because many of the Jews, on account of him, went away
and believed on Jesus.
Verse 12
On the next day a great multitude that had come to the
feast, hearing that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
VERSE 13
…took branches of palm-trees and went forth to meet him,
and cried: Hosanna, blessed is he that comes in the name of
the Lord, and blessed is the King of Israel.
Verse 14
But Jesus, finding a young ass, sat upon it, as it is
written:
VERSE 15
Fear not, daughter of Zion: behold,
thy King comes sitting upon the
foal of an ass.
VERSE 16
These things his disciples knew not at first, but when Jesus
had been glorified, then they remembered that these things
were written of him, and that they had done these things for
him.
VERSE 17
The multitude that was with him therefore testified that he
had called Lazarus from the tomb, and raised him from the
dead.
VERSE 18
For this reason also the multitude met him, because they
heard that he had done this sign.
VERSE 19
The Pharisees therefore said among themselves:
PHARISEES
You see that you profit nothing:
behold, the world has gone after
him.
VERSE 20
But of those that went up to worship at the feast, there
were some Greeks:
VERSE 21
…these therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of
Galilee, and asked him, saying:
GREEKS
Sir, we wish to see Jesus.
VERSE 22
Philip comes and tells Andrew: Andrew and Philip come and
tell Jesus.
VERSE 23
But Jesus answered them, saying:
JESUS
The hour has come that the Son of
man should be glorified.
Verse 24
JESUS
Verily, verily, I say to you,
unless a grain of wheat fall into
the ground and die, itself abides
alone; but if it die, it brings
forth much fruit.
VERSE 25
JESUS
He that loves his life shall lose
it, and he that hates his life in
this world shall keep it to life
eternal.
VERSE 26
JESUS
If any one serve me, let him follow
me, and where I am, there shall my
servant also be: if any one serve
me him will my Father honor.
VERSE 27
JESUS
Now is my soul troubled, and what;
shall I say? Father, save me from
this hour. But for this cause came
I to this hour.
VERSE 28
JESUS
Father, glorify thy name. There
came therefore a voice from heaven:
I have glorified it, and will
glorify it again.
VERSE 29
Therefore the multitude that stood by, hearing it, said that
it thundered:
Others said:
OTHERS
An angel has spoken to him.
VERSE 30
Jesus answered and said:
JESUS
Not for my sake came this voice,
but for yours.
VERSE 31
JESUS
Now is the judgment of this world:
now shall the prince of this world
be cast out,
VERSE 32
JESUS
…and I, when I shall have been
lifted up from the earth, will draw
all men to myself.
VERSE 33
But this he said, signifying by what kind of death he was
about to die.
VERSE 34
Then the multitude answered him:
MEN
We have heard out of the law that
the Christ abides forever, and how
sayest thou that the Son of man
must be lifted up? Who is this, the
Son of man?
VERSE 35
Jesus therefore said to them:
JESUS
Yet a little while the light is
among you. Walk while you have the
light, that darkness overtake you
not; and he that walks in darkness
knows not whither he goes.
VERSE 36
JESUS
While you have the light, believe
on the light, that you may become
sons of light. These things spoke
Jesus and went away and hid himself
from them.
VERSE 37
But though he had done so many signs before them, they
believed not on him.
VERSE 38
…that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled,
which he spoke:
ISAIAH
“Lord, who of us has believed what
is heard? And to whom has the arm
of the Lord been revealed?”
VERSE 39
For this reason they could not believe, because Isaiah said
again:
VERSE 40
ISAIAH
He has blinded their eyes and
hardened their hearts, lest they
should see with their eyes, and
understand with their heart, and
should turn and I should give them
health.
VERSE 41
These things said Isaiah, because he saw his glory, and
spoke of him.
VERSE 42
Yet however, of the rulers, many believed on him, but
because of the Pharisees they did not confess, lest they
should be put out of the synagogue;
VERSE 43
…for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of
God.
VERSE 44
But Jesus cried and said:
JESUS
He that believes on me believes not
on me, but on him that sent me.
VERSE 45
JESUS
…and he that sees me sees him
that sent me.
VERSE 46
JESUS
I have come a light into the world,
that whoever believes on me may not
abide in darkness.
VERSE 47
JESUS
And if any one hear my words and
keep them not, I judge him not; for
I came not to judge the world, but
to save the world.
VERSE 48
JESUS
He that rejects me and receives not
my words, has that which judges
him: the word that I have spoken,
that shall judge him in the last
day.
VERSE 49
JESUS
For I have not spoken of myself,
but the Father who sent me, he
himself has given me commandment
what I should say and what I should
speak.
VERSE 50
JESUS
And I know that his commandment is
life eternal. What things therefore
I speak, as the Father said to me,
so I speak.
