Resurrection
I am the resurrection and the life; he that believes on me, though he were dead, he shall live ~John 11:25
Chapter Eleven
CHAPTER 11: VERSE 1
But a man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of
Mary and her sister Martha.
VERSE 2
And it was Mary that anointed the Lord with ointment, and
wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was
sick.
VERSE 3
The sisters therefore sent to him, saying:
SISTERS
Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest
is sick.
VERSE 4
But Jesus hearing it, said:
JESUS
This sickness is not to death, but
for the glory of God, that the Son
of God may be glorified through it.
VERSE 5
Now, Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
VERSE 6
When therefore he had heard that he was sick, then indeed he
abode two days in the place where he was:
VERSE 7
…then after this he says to the disciples: Let us go into
Judea again.
VERSE 8
The disciples say to him:
DISCIPLES
Rabbi, the Jews just now sought to
stone thee, arid goest thou thither
again?
VERSE 9
Jesus answered:
JESUS
Are there not twelve hours of the
day? If any one walk in the day, he
stumbles not, because he sees the
light of the world:
VERSE 10
JESUS
…if any one walk in the night, he
stumbles, because the light is not
in him
VERSE 11
These things said he, and after this he says to them:
JESUS
Our friend Lazarus has fallen
asleep; but I go that I may awake
him.
VERSE 12
Then the disciples said to him:
DISCIPLES
Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he
shall be saved.
VERSE 13
Jesus, however, had spoken of his death; but they supposed
that he spoke of the rest of sleep.
VERSE 14
Therefore Jesus then said to them plainly:
JESUS
Lazarus is dead;
VERSE 15
JESUS
…and I rejoice for your sakes, in
order that you may believe, that I
was not there; but let us go to
him.
VERSE 16
Thomas, who is called Didymus, then said to his
fellow-disciples:
DIDYMUS (THOMAS)
Let I us also go, that we may die
with him.
VERSE 17
Jesus came therefore and found that he had been four days in
the tomb.
VERSE 18
But Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.
VERSE 19
And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary and their
friends, to comfort them concerning their brother.
VERSE 20
Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, met
him; but Mary sat in the house.
VERSE 21
Martha therefore said to Jesus:
MARTHA
Lord, if thou hadst been here, my
brother would not have died.
VERSE 22
MARTHA
And now I know that whatever things
thou shalt ask of God, God will
give thee.
VERSE 23
Jesus says to her:
JESUS
Thy brother shall rise.
VERSE 24
Martha says to him:
MARTHA
I know that he will rise in the
resurrection, in the last day.
VERSE 25
Jesus said to her:
JESUS
I am the resurrection and the life;
he that believes on me, though he
were dead, he shall live,
VERSE 26
JESUS
…and whoever lives and believes
on me shall never die: believest
thou this?
VERSE 27
She says to him:
MARTHA
Yes, Lord: I have believed that
thou art the Christ, the Son of
God, he that comes into the world.
VERSE 28
And after saying this she went away and called Mary her
sister secretly, saying:
MARTHA
The Teacher is present, and calls
for thee.
VERSE 29
When she heard, she rose quickly and came to him;
VERSE 30
…but Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in
the place where Martha had met him.
VERSE 31
Therefore the Jews that were with her in the house, and were
comforting her, seeing Mary, that she rose up quickly and
went out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the
tomb, that she might weep there.
VERSE 32
Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him,
fell at his feet, saying to him:
MARY
Lord, if thou hadst been here, my
brother would not have died.
VERSE 33
Jesus therefore, when he saw her weeping and the Jews that
came with her weeping, was greatly moved in spirit, and was
troubled,
VERSE 34
…and said:
JESUS
Where have you laid him?
They say to him:
JEWS
Lord, come and see.
VERSE 35
Jesus wept.
VERSE 36
Therefore said the Jews:
JEWS
See how he loved him.
VERSE 37
But some of them said:
OTHERS
Could not this man, that opened the
eyes of the blind man, have caused
that even this man should not die?
VERSE 38
Jesus therefore, again greatly moved within himself, comes
to the tomb; but it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
VERSE 39
Jesus says:
JESUS
Take away the stone.
Martha, the sister of him that had died, says to him:
MARTHA
Lord, the smell is now offensive;
for he has been dead four days.
VERSE 40
Jesus says to her:
JESUS
Did I not tell thee that if thou
wouldst believe thou shouldst see
the glory of God?
VERSE 41
They therefore took away the stone; but Jesus lifted up his
eyes and said:
JESUS
Father, I thank thee that thou hast
heard me.
VERSE 42
JESUS
But I knew that thou always hearest
me; but yet, on account of the
multitude that stands around, I
said it, that they may believe that
thou didst send me.
VERSE 43
And having said these things, he cried with a loud voice:
JESUS
Lazarus, come forth.
VERSE 44
And he that had been dead came forth, bound hands and feet
with swathing bands; and his face was bound around with a
handkerchief.
Jesus says to them:
JESUS
Loose him, and let him go.
VERSE 45
Many therefore of the Jews, that had come to Mary and had
seen what he did, believed on him;
VERSE 46
…but some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them
what Jesus had done.
VERSE 47
Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees brought
together the Sanhedrim, and said:
PHARISEES
What do we, for this man does many
signs?
VERSE 48
PHARISEES
If we let him alone thus, all will
believe on him; and the Romans will
come and take away both our place
and nation.
VERSE 49
But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest that
year, said to them:
CAIAPHAS
You know nothing,
VERSE 50
CAIAPHAS
…neither do you consider that it
is profitable for us that one man
die for the people and not that the
whole nation perish.
VERSE 51
But this he spoke not of himself, but, being chief priest
that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the
nation;
VERSE 52
…and not for the nation only, but that he might gather
into one the children of God also, that were scattered
abroad.
VERSE 53
From that day therefore they took counsel to kill him.
VERSE 54
Jesus then no longer walked openly among the Jews; but went
away thence into the country near the wilderness, to a city
called Ephraim; and there he abode with his disciples.
VERSE 55
But the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from
the country to Jerusalem before the passover, that they
might purify themselves.
VERSE 56
They therefore sought Jesus and said among themselves while
standing in the temple:
PHARISEES
What think you, that he will not
come to the feast?
VERSE 57
But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given
commandments that, if any knew where he was, he should make
it known, in order that they might take him.
