The Right
But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, to those that believe on his name ~John 1:12
Chapter One
CHAPTER 1: VERSE 1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
VERSE 2
He was in the beginning with God.
VERSE 3
All things came into being through him, and without him came
into being not one thing that is in being.
VERSE 4
In him is life, and the life was the light of men.
VERSE 5
And the light shines in darkness, and the darkness
comprehended it not.
VERSE 6
There came a man, sent from God; his name was John:
VERSE 7
This man came for a testimony, that he might testify of the
light, that all through him might believe.
VERSE 8
He was not the light, but came that he might testify of the
light.
VERSE 9
That was the true light, which, coming into the world, gives
light to every man.
VERSE 10
He was in the world, and the world came into being through
him, and the world knew him not.
VERSE 11
He came to his own country, and his own people received him
not.
VERSE 12
But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to
become children of God, to those that believe on his name,
VERSE 13
…who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh,
nor of the will of a man, but of God.
VERSE 14
And the Word became flesh, and tabernacled among us, and we
beheld his glory – the glory as of the Only Begotten of the
Father, full of grace and truth.
VERSE 15
John testified of him and cried, saying:
JOHN
This was he of whom I said: He that
comes after me has been advanced
before me, because he was before
me.
VERSE 16
JOHN
For of his fullness have we all
received, and grace for grace;
VERSE 17
JOHN
…for the law was given through
Moses, the grace and the truth came
through Jesus Christ
VERSE 18
JOHN
No one has seen God at any time;
the only begotten Son, who is in
the bosom of the Father, he has
made him known.
VERSE 19
And the testimony of John is this, when the Jews of
Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him:
JEWS
Who art thou?
VERSE 20
And he confessed and denied not, and confessed:
JOHN
I am not the Christ.
VERSE 21
And they asked him:
JEWS
What then? Art thou Elijah?
He said:
JOHN
I am not.
JEWS
Art thou the prophet?
And he answered:
JOHN
No.
VERSE 22
They then said to him:
JEWS
Who art thou? That we may give an
answer to those that sent us: what
sayest thou of thyself?
VERSE 23
He replied:
JOHN
I am the voice of one crying in the
wilderness: Make straight the way
of the Lord, as said Isaiah the
prophet.
VERSE 24
And some had been sent from the Pharisees…
VERSE 25
…and they asked him, and said to him:
PHARISEESIANS
Why then dost thou baptize, if thou
art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor
the prophet?
VERSE 26
John answered them, saying:
JOHN
I baptize in water: in the midst of
you there stands whom you know…
VERSE 27
JOHN
he that comes after me, the latchet
of whose sandal I am not worthy to
loose.
VERSE 28
These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where
John was baptizing.
VERSE 29
On the next day he sees Jesus coming to him, and says:
JOHN
Behold, the Lamb of God that takes
away the sin of the world!
VERSE 30
JOHN
This is he of whom I said: After me
comes a man who has been advanced
before me, because he was before
me.
VERSE 31
JOHN
And I knew him not, but that he
might be manifested to Israel,
therefore have I come baptizing in
water.
VERSE 32
And John testified, saying:
JOHN
I saw the Spirit descending, like a
dove, from heaven, and it abode
upon him.
VERSE 33
JOHN
And I knew him not, but he that
sent me to baptize in water, he
said to me: On whom thou shalt
see the Spirit descending and
abiding on him, this is he that
baptizeth in the Holy Spirit.
VERSE 34
JOHN
And I have seen, and I have
testified that this is the Son of
God.
VERSE 35
On the next day again John stood, and two of his disciples,
VERSE 36
…and looking upon Jesus as he was walking, he says:
JOHN
Behold, the Lamb of God!
VERSE 37
The two disciples heard him speaking, and followed Jesus.
VERSE 38
Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them:
VERSE 39
JESUS
What seek you?
They said to him:
DISCIPLES
Rabbi (which is called, when
translated, Teacher), where abidest
thou?
VERSE 40
He says to them:
JESUS
Come and see.
They came therefore and saw where he abode, and continued
with him that day: it was about the tenth hour.
VERSE 41
It was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, one of the two
that had heard from John and followed him:
VERSE 42
…he first finds his own brother Simon and says to him:
ANDREW
We have found the Messiah
which is, translated, Christ.
VERSE 43
He brought him to Jesus. Looking upon him, Jesus said:
JESUS
Thou art Simon the son of Joanna –
thou shalt be called Cephas,
which is, translated. Peter.
VERSE 44
On the next day he wished to go forth into Galilee, and
found Philip. And Jesus said to him:
JESUS
Follow me.
VERSE 45
But Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and
Peter.
VERSE 46
Philip finds Nathaniel, and says to him:
PHILIP
We have found him of whom wrote
Moses in the law, and the prophets,
Jesus, who is of Nazareth, the son
of Joseph.
VERSE 47
Nathaniel said to him:
NATHANIEL
Can anything good come out of
Nazareth?
Philip says to him:
PHILIP
Come and see.
VERSE 48
Jesus saw Nathaniel coming to him, and said concerning him:
JESUS
Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom
there is no guile.
VERSE 49
Nathaniel said to him:
NATHANIEL
Whence knowest thou me?
Jesus answered and said to him:
JESUS
Before Philip called thee, whilst
thou wast under the fig tree, I saw
thee.
VERSE 50
Nathaniel answered him:
NATHANIEL
Rabbi, thou art the Son of God,
thou art King of Israel.
VERSE 51
Jesus answered and said to him:
JESUS
Because I said to thee that I saw
thee under the fig tree, believest
thou? Thou shalt see greater things
than these.
